News Media Training for Narcotics Commanders and Law Enforcement Leaders

Our goal for this course is to give you the skills to represent your agency effectively in all forms of the news media, no matter the story.

We start with a brief examination of the news media in this country, its evolution and the dramatic changes of the past 20 years.  The effect on law enforcement has been profound.  Changes are bound to continue.

We then take you inside the media, explain how reporters think and show you how stories are chosen. With that information as a foundation, this course will provide you the tools to get positive coverage.  Conversely, when the news is not good, we are going to show you how to deal with the press in a forthright manner that will enhance your agency's reputation for honesty and trustworthiness.

TV and radio stations, newspapers, and news websites all rely on video; so, it is our mission to show you how to control the video images that portray your agency. We will help you improve your on-camera performance.

The class will demonstrate how to write news releases and advisories that will lead to media coverage and will help shape the story.  We will show you how to stage a successful press conference and how to raise public awareness of your agency.

Social media is critical to law enforcement agencies. We will look at how some agencies are putting it to use and give you some tips for the effective use of social media.

This course was developed with the encouragement Mr. Tim Rutledge, the former Director of Training for the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy (RCTA) ,
